Ex-policeman kills wife and child before taking own life

Two Leicestershire teenagers are being treated for serious injuries on Friday after their father fatally stabbed their mother and sister before killing himself.

Tobias Day, a former police officer, killed his wife Samantha and their seven-year-old daughter Genevieve, and attacked his two other children Kimberly and Adam before taking his own life at their home in Melton Mowbray on Thursday afternoon.

Neighbours said Tobias Day had recently lost his job. Leicestershire Police refused to comment on these suggestions, though a page on the force's website referred to his previous role as an inspector for the Beaumont Leys local policing unit.

Police forced their way into the Days' semi-detached family home in Robin Crescent, Melton Mowbray, at 16:23pm on Thursday following reports that a 15-year-old girl, believed to be Kimberly, had been found hurt.

The BBC reported that the alarm was raised after the 15-year-old girl ran injured into a nearby school.

Two children are being treated at a Nottingham hospital for serious injuries, Leicestershire Police said.

"A man, a woman and a child from the address have since died," the police said in a statement. "Two children are being treated at the Queen?s Medical Centre in Nottingham for serious injuries."

"We are in the initial stages of the investigation but at this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."

"The house has been cordoned off to allow for a forensic examination," the police said.

"Post mortem examinations are due to take place at a later stage."

Police were seen on Friday morning entering Swallowdale Primary School, where Samantha Day worked as a teacher.

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
