Wallaby winger McLean dies aged 63

Former Wallaby winger Jeff McLean has died at the age of 63 after a prolonged battle with cancer, the Queensland Rugby Union said on Friday.

McLean was a member of one of Australia?s most distinguished rugby families, with a Wallaby pedigree stretching back to 1880, the QRU said.

He played 13 Tests for Australia between 1971 and 1974, before a badly broken leg prematurely ended his career.

The older brother of former Wallaby captain Paul McLean, Jeff played his last Test in the same match that Paul made his Test debut, against New Zealand in Sydney in 1974.

He scored 85 points on Australia?s 1972 tour of New Zealand, from nine tries, 11 conversions and nine penalty goals.

QRU President Tony Shaw said Australian rugby would be deeply saddened by the news of his death.

"Jeff was an amazingly talented rugby player who achieved much during a relatively short representative career with Queensland and Australia," former Wallaby forward Shaw said.

"He would undoubtedly have gone on to an even more highly decorated career for Queensland and Australia had not a badly broken leg brought a premature end to his playing career in 1974, just a month after he and his brother Paul played their only Test match together."
